The steelworker, who declined to give his last name, said that the job had been a “challenging” one but that he was motivated by “a belief that we can all do this together.”
“We have a lot of people in this town that have been working on the job and they have a long way to go.
We have to continue,” he said.
“We need to put it all together.
We need to get together as a community, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
The steelworker said he was encouraged to find the right mentor to help him succeed.
“I have an amazing group of people I’m in touch with.
I’m working with people who have been there before,” he explained.
“They’ve all done it before, so it’s kind of a common thing.”
The worker said that his mentors are working on a new project with a group of local businesses.
“The community is behind us, we’re not going to let this happen.
We’re going the right way, and we’re trying to make it happen,” he continued.
“It’s a tough job, but I’m here to do it.
It’s a lot more rewarding than working in a factory.”
The new project will include a community garden in the backyard of the steelworker’s home.
He is hoping to get funding from the City of Brooklyn to help with the project.
